Screening of Video

Today was the screening of our music video to the rest of the class. I took the questions from our survey and put it on a word document so that we could collate both written data and digital data. Once we upload the video on YouTube, we will post our survey on Survey Monkey and begin to collect digital data. Later in the day, we will have the 100% finished version of the video to redo the written survey and also do a focus group.

Converting the digital survey into a printable one

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the video didn't export in time, however it has now and we plan to have our written data completed and also our focus group in time to gather enough data. In the meantime, I have uploaded the video to YouTube and I am ready to send it along with the survey.

Uploaded video from my account view

I made a few tweaks to my survey while also adding the link to my survey in the description:

And I was ready to send of the digital copy of my survey:
Sending survey...
And finally, here is the video, 100% complete:

I will be uploading screenshots along with my analysis on how me and Jody edited the video together.

UPDATE 3/2/16: Today we screened the video to our class and had them give back the feedback from our printed survey. Later today we will have our focus group to answer our other open ended questions.

UPDATE: We gathered a small focus group to watch the video and answer some open ended questions that we can further analyse with the quantitative data we gathered.

Focus group questions:

What was the best thing about the music video? Why?

What improvements would you make about the music video? Why?

How would you compare the videos to other hip hop videos in terms of acting, effects, camera shots etc?

Did you feel the representations of the hip hop artists were accurate and what was it about them?

Was the font in the music video appropriately used and how did you feel it fitted in the video? What else could've been used if you didn't like it?

Here is the feedback we received from the session:

Ancillary Feedback (not finished)

I will ask the following questions to multiple people either in person or in an online survey in order to get some feedback for my ancillary tasks.

1. What genre are you?
2. How old are you?
3. What genre do you think these products are for?
4. What is the link between both, ancillary products with music video, and digipak with the advert?
5. Does this meet standards of a professional hip-hop digipak?
6. If these were your products, how would you improve them?
7. What would you rate these products out of 10?

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/HCD9FM8(Link to the online survey)

I will upload screenshots of the feedback once I have received it.

Feedback Analysis:
-The majority of responses were from males and only a few females. Due to hip-hop being a male dominated scene, this feedback is ok, however if I got more female responses then I would be able to see the difference in what woman expect to see in hip-hop rather than just males. But it is arguable that the males responses are more important and relevant as they are the ones mainly involved with hip-hop whereas woman are just objectified.
-Also, the majority of the feedback i gained were from people aged 17-19. This is a good age range as hip-hop listeners tend to be withing this range also, however it would have been better if I could get feedback from people within their 20's as young adults are also within the hip-hop audience.
-All answers for question three were correct. Everybody thought the products belonged to the genre of hip-hop. This shows I used codes and conventions correctly in order to show its for hip-hop.
-
-Approximately 85% of people thought that the products met their standards of a professional hip-hop digipak. The other 15% said it didn't.
-The reasons for the 15% was mainly due to the inside and the back of the digipak. The back had too much going on whereas professional hip-hop would have a much simpler back, so they would change the back of the digipak. In order to meet their standards for the back, I would remove the designs in the top left and right corners
-The highest rating was ___ and the lowest was ___. So in total, the average score out of ten was ___.

Ancillary Progress Advert

Going into the creating of this advert, I already had an idea of what I wanted to create. Of course the name of the artist in big clear font in order for the audience to be able to see straight away its an advert for RICO. I also wanted to put an audience inside the letters as RICO is a performer and like other hip-hop artists, performs in front of a large crowds. The crowd inside the letters would be silhouettes (in black) with the letters being white, this still keeps to the black and white theme seen throughout his album. I got the inspiration for this audience inside the letters idea from an advert for Drakes's album, take care.

The reason for not including the O, is because I wanted to put RICO himself as the letter O. In the picture of RICO, there will be smoke coming from his mouth similar to the smoke on the front cover of his album.
The next step I took in my creation of the advert was the name of the album and the date. The name will be in the same font seen on the front cover in order for the fans to recognise in the future, every time they see that font, they think of RICO's album. The date will be a little bigger as this will inform the audience when they can buy it.
In the Drake advert, we can also see a website for cash money which is the record label he is signed to. So I will include the logo for RICO's record label (def jam) and RICO's website.
After doing the logo for def jam, it reminded about RICO'S logo. Also the parental advisory logo which features on the front of the album cover.
Next I bad to fill the bug empty space. I saw another piece of inspiration from yet another Drake advertisement for take care. I consisted of text saying some names of other popular artists in order to attract a whole new audience resulting in more sales. So I did the same with two title from songs featuring on RICO's album. However, due to keeping to the black and white theme already, if I made the song names in white, nothing would stand out. So I made it yellow, therefore there was something to catch peoples eye.

Final DigiPak / Advert

Final Digipak

All image organising/arranging was done on InDesign but all image manipulations such as rubbing images out, overlaying etc.was done on Photoshop.

The additional design next to the CD design, is what will appear behind the CD.

Ancillary Progress Inside Right of Digipak

The first thing I did with the right side of my digipak was add the name of the artist. Due to looking at codes and conventions, something from the front cover would be included inside the digipak also (examples in previous post), bearing this in mind, I kept the same font for the album name title however adjusted the size to fit the CD correctly.

As mention in the previous post also, i moved the text from the left side of the digipak to the right side.

Finally, the artists logo was the next and last addition to the right side of the digipak.

R.I.C.O. Social Media Pages

Here we have created accounts on behalf of R.I.C.O. for both Facebook and Twitter and posted the music video on both pages.

Ancillary Progress Inside Left of Digipak

With the inside of my digipak, I wanted to maintain the same look as I have with the front and back of my album. Therefore I kept the black background. My first thought of what to do was the main image. I faded the bottom of the image to it matched the shadows to the right of the picture and kept its darkness to the image. This is the difference between the original and the faded.

I then wanted to add the logo once again, but in a different manner. I decided to play around with Photoshop to edit the logo and see how I could manipulate the logo. This is what I came u with.

I now needed to fill the page a bit more. So as another convention used in hip hop, I added text below the image. I attempted the text going over the top, down the side, even on top on the image (without the logo) but just below the image not only follows the conventions better but looks better also. The text would consist of producers, executive producers and management etc.

I decided to remove the logo going across the main image due to the majority of insides of CD cases being very simple. I also changed some of the script in the text I added and made it more relevant to the situation by making Jerard, Jody, Kyle and myself the producers. The text is also now more clearer and larger.

Like many hip-hop albums, the inside would consist of something that is already on the front. Here are a few examples.

So I added the same title from the front...

I was browsing through other pictures I have of Abul playing R.I.C.O. and found another image I feel i could use for the inside of my digipak. I rubbed out his whole body apart from the chain, his face and his hand. This way we can see the symbolism of wealth (chain), his hand which points to his name (emphasis on R.I.C.O.) and his face which promotes him. Here's what I came up with.

While creating the right side of the inside of the digipak, I realised the writing I placed beneath the main image, is mainly used on the CD like in the Jay-Z and Biggie Smalls album shown above.
